Abstract

Given its potential as biofuel the demand of Jatropha curcas seeds with higher quality has been increased. Since pathogens are considered one the main problems in Jatropha curcas seeds, seed health evaluation is essential. Damage caused by pathogens include death of seedlings prior to emergence (pre-emergence damping-off), root rot, necrotic spots on leaves, stems or fruits, seedlings with deformities, hypertrophy and underdevelopment, tissue discoloration and latent infections. Direct damages include seed rot and loss of germination. Therefore, the study of procedures for rapid and accurate evaluation of seed physiological potential contributes to decision making in many stages of seed production, especially after maturity. Magnetic Resonance imaging and multispectral imaging are promising alternatives for the evaluation of seed health, which also allow the identification of physiological changes and mechanical damages. In addition, this research aims to stablish pattern of images using X-ray tests to detect and differentiate mechanical damages in seed lots. Germination and vigor tests will also be conducted and compared to the pattern of images obtained by the techniques, associating the integrity of vital parts in the seeds with their physiological potential.
